Reviving Tradition: Panlong Tiandi Hosts Immersive Xinsheng Festival Blending Ancient Culture with Modern Vibrancy

In September, Panlong Tiandi in Qingpu District will host a 12-day cultural celebration that breathes new life into traditional festivals by blending them with modern lifestyles. This event is part of the revitalization of the historic Panlong Town.

Shui On Group’s Xintiandi brand announced the launch of the “Xinsheng Festival,” a new cultural initiative centered on the idea that “tradition is creation.” The festival draws from traditional Chinese customs, merging them with contemporary life to reimagine the significance of these time-honored festivals.

Scheduled from September 6 to 17, this cultural event marks the debut of the Xinsheng Festival. It will feature over 90 performances, 15 workshops, a literary forum, a four-day banquet, and participation from more than 50 brands.

As a highlight of the “Shanghai Summer” activities, the festival will offer an immersive experience of the Jiangnan Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrating traditional Chinese culture and showcasing the dynamic energy of Shanghai.

The event is divided into four main sections: performance, market, feast, and workshop.

In the performance section, notable folk musicians and artists will deliver intimate shows, complemented by over 30 public art performances from institutions like the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Shanghai Theater Academy. These performances will harmonize with the picturesque scenery of Panlong’s historic streets, pavilions, and bridges.

The feast section will feature a nearly 300-meter-long table banquet over four days, inspired by Shanghai’s spirit of inclusivity and rich food culture. This offers a fresh take on the Mid-Autumn Festival reunion dinner, steeped in Jiangnan traditions.

The workshop section will include engaging activities such as a Mid-Autumn lantern-making workshop led by intangible cultural heritage inheritor Li Wentao, cultural tours, night tea parties, and a tasting of Qianpu’s special rice cakes.

Adding an artistic flair, the Yuz Museum will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a special exhibition during the festival.

A Mid-Autumn Festival fair will also take place, giving attendees a chance to explore the deep-rooted customs and culture associated with this festival.

Additionally, artist Wen Qiuwen will create a unique Chinese-style lantern installation titled “Moon God in the Water.”

Panlong Tiandi reinterprets the ancient Jiangnan watertown as a contemporary urban retreat. With a history spanning over 1,000 years, dating back to the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-618), Panlong Town is one of Shanghai’s 32 historically protected areas.

Starting with the Mid-Autumn Festival at Panlong Tiandi, Shui On Group plans to celebrate more traditional festivals across its various urban landmark projects under this new cultural initiative.
